Literacy
Literacy Planning:
A copy of my termly planning for the topic of toys. There are six detailed
weekly plans covering whole class teaching and activities for Upper Middle and
Lower abilities in the class. Each weekly plan has a clear literacy focus and
relates to the national curriculum.
Writing a Toy Poem:
A weekly plan for a focus on writing a poem about a toy. Children are
introduced to a poem written by AA Milne about a teddy bear. Children then plan
and write their own poem bringing the poem to life through drama and retelling
activities. Includes a set of worksheets for each ability. The poem is split
into 4 parts for 4 groups to work on.
Writing a Toy Story:
A weekly plan for a focus on writing a story about a toy using a story mountain
format. This lesson includes 4 interactive smartboard presentations to be used
to support whole class teaching.
Writing a Non Fiction
Toy Book: A weekly plan for a focus on writing a book about
toys. Children to investigate non fiction books and discuss their features and
then use this knowledge to make their own. Three fantastic smartboard
presentations to introduce the learning and a link to a super website.
Writing Instructions for
Scooter: A weekly plan for a focus on instruction writing.
Children to be introduced to writing simple instructions initially for using a
helmet and safety equipment and then writing instructions using their own
scooters. This plan includes worksheets to support and interactive smartboard
presentations.
Describing Bears:
A weekly plan for a focus on using adjectives to describe different teddy bears
of varying ages. Resource includes a powerpoint presentation of three ages of
bears (from different eras) as well as a smartboard presentation to support the
whole class learning.
Numeracy
Numeracy Planning:
A copy of my termly planning for the topic of toys. There are six detailed
weekly plans covering whole class teaching and activities for Upper Middle and
Lower abilities in the class. Each weekly plan has a clear numeracy focus and relates
to the national curriculum.
Favourite Toy Bar Chart:
A format worksheet for children to ask their friend what is their favourite toy
and record onto the sheet. Great for use outside the classroom on outdoor
learning.
Toybox Challenge:
A smartboard presentation with some toy images for children to use real objects
to record and measure. Decide on the size of the box and children work out what
will fit.
Toy Box Problem Solving:
Children to use the smartboard presentation to be introduced to a problem of
Ryan’s toy box. He has a box full of toys and counts how many wheels there are.
How many cars and bikes would there be? A great open ended activity where
children can apply their knowledge.
Toy Topic Resources
Topic Afternoon
Planning: A copy of my termly planning for the topic of
toys. There are six plans with cross curricular links to science, history and
PSHE curriculum areas. These plans also include outdoor planning activities as
well as hands on activities for class based activities.
Design a Toy:
A toy format sheet for drawing a toy design and listing materials required.
Out and New Toys:
A sheet of old and new toys for children to sort into 2 categories as well as a
format for children to cut and stick on to.
Playtimes Past:
A super song about old toys in a toy shop. Great as part of a topic of toys or
class assembly.
SCUMPS Sheet:
A super worksheet where children choose their favourite sheet and describe it
using the six describing characteristics such as size, materials, use etc,
Great for introducing the properties of toys and investigating a range of toys.
List of Websites:
A bank of websites to use throughout the toys topic. Lots of fantastic stories,
songs and activities to watch and listen to.
Toy Music:
A super piece of music based upon toys that come to life from a toy shop shelf.
Great to create excitement, imagination and interest in a new topic! Also has
worked very well in supporting a dance performance based upon toys.
Toys
Mind Map: A worksheet format for children to complete at
the start of term on what they already know about toys, great for children’s
voice and implementing their already known ideas into future planning.
